A Nouveau Realiste, like Arman, César (1921-98, France) became known for his use of scrap material. A lack of means led him in 1960 to begin his compressions of cars that he found on worksites, and which he later applied to other 'compressible' objects: metal boxes, tubes of toothpaste, musical instruments, and so on. A later series of works were his expansions of polyurethane, which he poured in generous quantities over the floor.
