Perhaps the first artist to understand the full potential of TV and video, the long career of Nam June Paik (1932, Korea) has spanned art, dance, music, and philosophy. He became famous in the 1960s for his "altered TVs," similar to John Cage's prepared pianos, where televisions were manipulated (assaulted, even) with magnets, creating unsettling colours and distortions. More recently, as in his Guggenheim retrospective in 2000, he has made use of laser and video installations.
